I have a couple of C200 cameras - they are cheap and have some nice features. They operate in two modes based on the amount of available light - day and night mode. My understanding is that on the transition to night node an IR filter is moved away from lens, thus making it more sensitive to the IR spectrum. That's when camera's IR lights automatically turn on as well, illuminating the environment, invisible to human sight.

One thing that bugged me was that I couldn't monitor outdoor area with having those cameras indoors behind a window. That's because the IR light gets reflected off the window and nothing can be seen because of that. Unfortunately it doesn't look possible to turn off the IR light in night mode.

After I stumbled upon a guide to camera disassembly, I've decided to disassemble mine as well. It didn't look too complicated and I wanted to see if I can do something about the lights. I ended up covering them, so that no light can escape the camera.

Disassemble

I recommend following this disassemble guide which shows how to reach the board with the lights. I'm sharing a couple of photos as well in case it would help.

Remove the cover

Unscrew the marked screws

Unscrew the marked screws

Push out the board with lens and unscrew the marked screws

Note the 4 IR lights

I have painted them black

And covered in aluminum foil, which blocks most of the light

Conclusion

Painting the lights has made this modification practically irreversible. I've experimented with sticking black tape on camera body as well, which worked to some extent, but required too many layers to block all of the light.

Could have I just moved the camera behind the window? Yes, but that would be less fun :)
